“CLEAN ME UP” STORMWATER CONTEST
Come one, come all! Every Colchester student (K-12) is encouraged to submit either a poster or video to help us all to learn, love, care about and work together to protect our beautiful Malletts Bay from stormwater pollution.
By combining creativity with science, the Malletts Bay Clean up STORMWATER contest empowers our students to imagine new ways to reduce runoff, clean and filter pollutants, and protect Malletts Bay for generations to come.
No matter where you live, we all live in a watershed , where rain or snow goes on an exciting journey, from our roofs, yards, and streets to local wetlands, streams, and lakes. The water that bounces off roofs, streets and other hard surfaces and goes on this incredible journey is what we call stormwater.
Our Bay is home to incredible creatures like long nosed gar, transparent crayfish, and the rare and endangered sturgeon, and where we swim, fish, and paddle.
But, guess what? Our actions can hurt our Bay, and it’s time for us to make a splash of inspiration for a cleaner, happier world with your creative videos and posters!
What is Stormwater anyway?
Did you know that every time it rains, pollutants like trash, oil, pesticides, and plastics flow over our roads and other hard surfaces and wash into storm drains and flow directly to our streams, our beloved Malletts Bay and Lake Champlain?
Many of these pollutants contain Phosphorus, which is one of the largest threats to Malletts Bay! These pollutants threaten wildlife, degrade habitats, and impact human health. For more info, go to the Town of Colchester’s stormwater page.
